The Inverness High School concert also saw the launch of the 2009 Inverness Winter Festival’s Advent Calendar Music Trail which took musical events around Inverness for everyone to enjoy.
In preparation for the concert The Highland Council’s Traditional Music Coordinator Margo Maclennan and Mandolin tutor Donald Jack joined forces with Scottish Highlands Inverness Moray Chinese Association (SHIMCA) to bring a taste of Scottish and Chinese traditional music to young people.
At the end of September, professional Glasgow based Chinese singer Fong Liu, who is a member of the Harmony Chinese Music Ensemble,joined Margo and Donald in a workshop with 60 children and staff of the two primary 7 classes at Crown Primary School.
The children and staff were taught how to sing a Traditional Chinese Song and given the outline and description of how to colour a Peking Mask as part of the traditional Chinese and Scottish song workshop.
Then a second workshop was held on October 27th at the Scottish Highlands Inverness Moray Chinese Association (SHIMCA)with Chinese children and their helpers organised by Monica Lee MacPherson MBE.
The culmination of both workshops brought the children from the two groups together in a wonderful performance.
The first concert of the 2009 Inverness Winter Festival’s Advent Calendar Music Trail took place on 1st December at Inverness High School.
It was a multicultural event with a mix of traditional Scottish music provided by the TMC Class students and Chinese traditional music performed by Glasgow based Chinese singer Fong Liu and Crown Primary pupils.
The concert was the finale to the Cultural Bridges Fund project which brought children from Crown Primary and Scottish Highlands Inverness Moray Chinese Association (SHIMCA)together with a series of music and art workshops.
Chinese singer Fong Liu, who is a member of the Harmony Chinese Music Ensemble, worked in partnership with TMC Co-ordinator Margo MacLennan and musician and tutor Donald Jack to teach the pupils how to sing a traditional Chinese song and decorate a Peking mask.
The result was a spectacular finale with Fong, Eddie McGuire of the Whistle Binkies and all the children performing a traditional Chinese song then Scottish song Loch Lomond.
